UVM defines first-generation college students as those for whom no parent or guardian completed a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university.

As a program within the Center for Academic Success, we are guided by a shared commitment to student success, academic growth and equitable access to education and support. With respect for multiple perspectives and identities, we aspire to promote student autonomy and interdependence within the University community.

First-Generation Graduation Reception | May

As first-generation students, you will be the first in your family to complete a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university. We celebrate this achievement and the endurance, self-advocacy, discovery, and resilience you demonstrated to get to where you are now. To commemorate your journey, FirstGen@UVM and UVM Firsts are excited to invite you to annual First-Generation Graduation Reception. This will be an opportunity for you to celebrate your accomplishments in community through food, graduation headshots, and a first-generation student honor cord to be worn at graduation!

FirstGen@UVM Spotlight Series: Meet Menuka!

Photo of Menuka Rai smiling and holding a peace sign

"Being a first-gen student is a huge part of my identity, so I'm always willing to help and introduce resources to students who have similar or different backgrounds as me. I'm also very grateful for this educational experience, and later want to work with first-gen students so I can give back to my community."
